Subject:Silver plated sake cup (?) signature
Posted By: Martin Michels Wed, Sep 13, 2017 IP: 84.26.216.123

Hi,

I have in my collection this Japanese (?) silver plated sake cup (?) with a lot of wear. But I like the dolphin handles.
I'm wondering if anyone can decipher the signature, so I can do more research about when and by who this was made.
Thanks in advance,
Martin

吧城 BaCheng (?)
大世界 DaShiJie Great World
公司 gongsi Company

正壯 Zheng Zhuang Truely strong

More Chinese than Japanese.

Mikeoz,
Thanks again, always thought it was Japanese.
But you're right, it's indeed Chinese.
Regards,
Martin.

I fully agree with Mikeoz, the cup is Chinese.
In my reading
吧城 is the old Chinese name of Batavia (Jakarta)
大世界公司祭 Great World Co.
定荘 Ding Wholesale Shop
With regards,

Thanks I.Nagy,
Batavia: indeed that makes sence, Ba Cheng was translated as Bar City. And since I live in The Netherlands the connection to Batavia is obvious.
I guessed this item was before WWII and Indonesia was still a part of The Netherlands and the capital was Batavia (later Jakarta).
Thanks again,
Regards,
Martin.
