Subject:Woodblock Print - Identification help, please Mt Fuji/Hara Station
Posted By: Warren Galle Sat, Sep 16, 2017 IP: 108.51.188.35

I am looking for help identifying the artist of this woodblock print. It appears to be a view of Mt Fuji from Hara station, but I can't find anything on the image or the signature. But then, I am very new to woodblocks. Any assistance with the image, its signature, and the poem translation would be welcome. The size of the print is about 8" X 10.5"

東海道五拾三次 Fifty-three Stations of Tokaido Road
原 Hara
廣重賀 Hiroshige ga (Hiroshige picture)
(This is the signature -Right bottom)

This is the so-called Sanoki (佐野喜)or Kyouka-iri (狂歌入)edition of the series from 1840 (or
later print)
Kyouka-iri means, there are so-called "mad poems" written on each print.

The kyouka on this print in my translation reads,
けふいくか What's the date today
足よ腰よと Oh my leg, oh my waist,
あゆみ来て I walked up here,
見あぐるはらの Whenever I look up
不二の I can observe the greatness
大きさ of Fuji
数寿垣 Inada

(Kyou iku ka,Ashi yo,koshi yo to,
Ayumikite miaguru hara no Fuji no ookisa
Inada

The last word Inada (Engl.yellowtail: name of a fish) serves as an ending pun or wordplay,

On the first Hoeido (保永堂)edition (1832) one
can see women accompanied by manservant who is
carrying their baggages, not this three
small tea-houses with men and horses.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Warren's print is probably a Taisho (1920s) reprint/reissue, printed from newly carved blocks.

Guy.

I agree with Guy that it is not an original.

The artist is Hiroshige. The Boston MFA has a copy of your print here:
