Subject:Could anyone help identify this bowl?
Posted By: Endre Thu, Sep 21, 2017 IP: 2602:306:c51c:e200:1

This bowl is about 7" across. It has a single "o" marked under the glaze. I think it is Japanese transferware from Meiji period, but I haven't come across any with this design. That is what mostly comes up when I search for blue and white transfer bowl. It looks like whoever made it was in a hurry, so maybe the "o" is just a mistake? I am hoping someone could help me with whether it is Japanese or Chinese, and your opinion on the mark and age of it. Thanks

The overall impression from the blue & white pattern is Japanese transfer ware of the type called "in-ban", but I don't recall seeing the mark either. The rough re-glazing job on the back suggests it might also be transfer ware made in the 1950s-60s by porcelain ornamentation factories in Hong Kong and Macao.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks, I appreciate it Bill. I thought the foot was kind of shallow compared to a pair of paper stenciled Imari plates I have, and to these in-ban transfers I saw on the web. Looking for sloppy re-glazing is a great tip to keep in mind for distinguishing these wares. Your a wealth of knowledge, thanks again!
