Subject:Another Republican Ceramic Mark
Posted By: Ian Dubin Tue, Sep 26, 2017 IP: 42.2.219.172

Hi there

I have acquired a fairly extensive collection of mainly Republican Era art, including some nice ceramics and pottery. Provenance is excellent as they were sourced from the estate of a collector who operated in Hong Kong from the 50s through the early 90s

I am currently trying to identify the artist's mark on the 'lucky Chinese cabbage' shown in the attached photos. The piece is about a foot long and quite heavy.

Grateful for any assistance.

Ian Dubin

The mark on your "lucky cabbage" reads,

作品長興 Zuopin Changxing, Changxing Product
(Changxing is a county in Huzhou,Zhejiang)

With regards,
I.Nagy

I'll take a stab at those wiggly lines and guess they might say 長興作品 (Chang Xing Zuo Pin), as read in mandarin pinyin from the top left down and across. This possibly translates to "A piece of handiwork in constant fashion". A mark in that informal seal script style probably indicates a post-1950 production date, possibly from a crafts maker in Taiwan or Hong Kong.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks very much

Post 1950s is disappointing but fits the Provenance
