Subject:Satsuma Mark
Posted By: Linda Sat, Sep 30, 2017 IP: 75.154.71.43

Can anyone identify the satsuma mark pictured. I believe the artist's name is the 1st and 2nd last characters. There is also a corresponding seal mark for those two characters. Also, can anyone direct me to a good book on Satsuma marks ??
Thank you

Linda,

The marks spells:
Dai Nippon (Great Japan) 大日本
Satsuma Yaki (Satsuma ware) 薩广 焼
Juho Ga (Painted by Juho) 壽峰 画

Juho is in the Japanese ON-reading, in KUN-reading the name spells as Kotobukimine. In both cases there is not much to find on the internet about those names. I have an other signature with Juho, but the 2nd character is different: 壽鳳.

I have no suggestion about a book of Satsuma marks, but I've you Google this link:
https://www.trocadero.com/directory/Antiques/Regional-Art/Asian/Japanese/Porcelain
and search with "Satsuma", you find a lot of information about good quality Satsuma and their marks.

Regards,
Martin.
