Subject:Lang Yao, Sang De Boeuf, Ox Blood - WHATS THE DIFFERENCE?

Correct me if I’m wrong...

They’re all on the spectrum of peach-bloom?

Lang Yao:
1. 100% red
2. red with underneath white showing
3. All of the above plus areas of purple

Sang De Boeuf and Ox Blood:
1. 100% red
2. red and underneath white showing

According to "A Handbook of Chinese Ceramics" by the New York Met Museum's Asian Research Curator Emeritus, Suzanne G. Valenstein, those three names all apply to copper red porcelains produced using the same basic high-temperature reduced-atmosphere kiln-firing method. The color may be enhanced by reintroducing oxygen at the end of the firing period.

Peachbloom glazes have a higher concentration of copper and undergo a stepped firing process that uses layers of clear glaze to isolate the copper from oxidation.

The Valenstein book and another, "Chinese Ceramics", by the Victoria & Albert's Rose Kerr, both devote space to these processes.

Best regards,

Bill H.
