Subject:Double gourd vase, one of my last mystery items
Posted By: Endre Sun, Nov 12, 2017 IP: 2600:1700:6a40:2460:

We have been trying off and on for the last several months to identify this vase. I have been hesitant about posting it because I know celadon is hard to identify sometimes, and have seen some intense debates about it. With limited knowledge, but growing knowledge-thanks to this forum and the kind people who share their expertise or experience with certain things, I have decided to give this a chance. I have provided photos that will hopefully be able to show the color, the other objects are irrelevant aside from color they are American greens, and various Asian blues and whites. I have read that color is quite relevant on celadon. This vase is 9 5/8 inch tall or about 24.5cm. I have not seen this shape, but the foot only looks very close to the one I see on a vase at Chinesemasterpieces.com. It is under the Qing tag as Qing dynasty qianlong celadon mark and period. Having paid very little for this, I will be happy to have any good or not so good information about this, because I like it either way. It would be nice to have a rough idea of its origin and age so I can pass on the information to the next generation. Thank you for looking and thanks for any help you may be able to provide

Dear Endre

Sorry to disappoint you, but the footrim alone looks modern. It is quite smooth, as if the porcelain were refined by machine, but it looks as if some attempt were made to stain it to look older.

That's just my take, however. I hope more knowledgeable members will comment. I suspect the shape of the vase is a better clue still. Is it possible to get a closeup image of the footrim?

Kind regards
J.Lim

Here are a couple of other photos. I don’t want to pass any misinformation about this vase down the line. I like it either way. Big difference though between any Qing and very recent objects, so I would like to clear that up with help from you experts. I was leaning towards a much more recent than 18th century myself by the odd shape plus smoothness but modern is kind of a broad and vague word. I don’t shop at Christys, so I only rely on photos. Antique, old, vintage, almost brand new, does anyone know anything about if from Chinese, Korea, Japan, etc? The black smudge on the bottom, was a black mark from the big box charity shop in USA. I was unable to remove it completely with warm water. I look forward to any comments or a push in the right direction. Again, I humbly thank you for viewing and any info you could provide

Dear Endre

I suppose in Chinese porcelain "modern" would simply mean "too modern to be interesting", which I guess would be 1960s onwards? Dating becomes very difficult; your vase could easily have been made last year. The foot certainly looks very smooth.

Kind regards

Thank you for your reply j.Lim. I suppose 1960s would be better than last year. When my kids are 40 that would be almost 100 years old. Last year is ok too. I think it is interesting in the fact that it is unique, it won’t interest serious collectors or those interested in big money, but in my view it is art, looks to be one of a kind and that the potter took time and energy to design and create it makes me think- if nothing more. Here is a photo that looks like the top of my vase, and the bottom of my vase looks like a typical double gourd of some period, the glaze looks like a Longquan color and texture. Is it Chinese, I think so but still not sure. Any further information or critiques are appreciated, humbly and respectfully

Thank you for your insights. I believe this is in fact Chinese by the smooth clay which appears to have iron content, the recessed flaring foot, and a unique mixture of a jun and double gourd shape. I think this may be an artists free expression which occurs mainly in modern times. I don’t think this vase is trying to be anything in particular by the lack of attempt at an aged footrim and lack of unglazed bottom, the secondary crazing is not artificially dirty, nor do I think it was mass produced. If anyone happens to see this form at a retail shop, or if you recognize its style from a local potter in your home countries, if you are the previous owner, please let me know. J.Lim dates this as modern 1960s+, and I completely respect his knowledge. This artist may still be living and producing pottery. I am going to mark this down as art pottery of likely Chinese origin Circa 2015. Provenance starts with me I guess. I will check the box for receiving email notifications. I respect your individual collectible interests, and I hope my own personal opinions are not seen as throwing stones. Thanks again

Just found that this vase was made for Maitland Smith in Thailand by unknown potter. Maitland Smith has been in business for 30 years, specializing in design. Thank you J.Lim for your interest in replying, I appreciate it very much
