Subject:Is this an urn or an incense pot?
Posted By: Alison Tue, Nov 14, 2017 IP: 90.215.189.65

Hello
My nan has had this little urn for a long time. I just wondered if anyone can give me info on what it is eg urn/incense pot? I would also be interested to know it’s age. It has no markings but is beautifully painted in a ‘raised’ paint effect.

from what little I know, it cannot be an urn, it most likely is an Incense burner.

Dear Alison

I think your nan has a koro, or incense pot, Satsuma/Moriage style, only in porcelain rather than stoneware, maybe early 20th century? Someone more knowledgeable can comment!

I attach a picture of the first Asian antique I ever bought, a satsuma koro (in stoneware) about the same era. Note the similar dog decorations. This object I have since sold.

Kind regards

This is a Japanese incense burner in the Moriaga style. Probably not that old.
