Subject:Kunisada? Pale colors?
Posted By: maria Thu, Nov 16, 2017 IP:

Hi, I'm wondering about this print, the colors are not exactly the same as on other pictures I've seen on the webb. Is this a later print? wonder with best regards/Maria

Your triptych was printed around 1850 (I can't see the censor seals to give a better date). At that time, the prints used vegetable dyes which fade when exposed to (UV) light. Obviously, from the frame, your print has been displayed and enjoyed over the years. As my wife says: "It's faded. It's all blue and orange."

Below are two prints (about 10 years later than yours) by Yoshiiku from our collection. Given the colors, do you think there is any relation between the two?

See the link below for the answer.

Thank You for the reply. :) Now I understand why the colors look like they do, interesting. It is also visible in the prints you uploaded, and the link. Thank you very much for your explanation. I will read more about these "early" colors. Best regards to You and Your wife / maria | Associations | Articles | Exhibitions | Galleries |
