Posted By: Mic Fri, Dec 15, 2017 IP: 4.16.27.83

Hello, I believe I have an Asian censer. My question is how old do you think it is? Also where do you think it came from, chinese? Thank you for any information, I have never had one of these before.

Thank you for all of the information. I was wondering if you would know how to translate the inside?

Sorry to tell you that the censer is about 10 years old.
Here is the translation of the beginning and end.

北京憙迎五環奥運 Beijing welcomes the Olympic Games with joy
全燿九州盛世盛事 We the glorious nine divisions
(Poetic name of China) let us complete a flourishing age and the great event.....
.........
...明崛起之志 ...rise great powers with aspiration.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you! So this piece was made to commemorate the olympics? Very interesting. Any advice on finding comparable pieces?
Thank you.

The rest of inscription reads,

....萬国同席 華彩華音
全球供期 古銅都銅陵
鋳春秋寶鑑 以證後興之氣....

Taking this opportunity, the old copper capital
Tongling offers this Chunqiu copper casting to
the georgeous and brilliant participants from
the whole world as a proof of the spirit to rise powers wit aspiration.

Sorry for the flatulent style translation, but I tried to give it back as much verbatim as possible.

I do not think that this inscription was simply etched into a real ex-excavation site Chunqiu (770-476 BC) period copper censer.

With regards,
I.Nagy

This is a very nice looking object, thanks for posting this. I am not an expert, and I can’t really give you any concrete answer, but it does look possibly Chinese and old. I believe there are posts on the forum that deal with issues of patina, that you could read up on. I think to date it accurately someone with experience would need to look at it in detail and possibly a cross section. Here is a site you can see an actual archaeological site. You will need to copy and paste to your search browser http://giaoducthoidai.vn/khoa-hoc/tim-thay-co-vat-dong-den-thoi-xuan-thu-chien-quoc-2314941.html

or go to

Hope this helps a little bit
