Subject:Help please! Translation of Mark! Auction House estimate realistic?
Posted By: MoonKnight Wed, Dec 20, 2017 IP: 2003:dd:3be1:3174:45

Hi!
I inheritated this jar from my Grandmother and gave it for an evaluation to an auction house. They couldn't translate the mark and told me the jar to be 19th/20th century and worth only a starting bid of 100$.
Could someone here translate the mark please and tell me if this auction house is trustworthy (age estimate and pricing)?
Thank you so much!

In Chinese Mandarin, the character 利 (Li), which apparently is the lower one of two on your jar, can mean 'sharp', 'of benefit' and 'profit'. The top character, if there is something there besides glaze runs, is indecipherable.

Best regards,

Bill H.
