If you're going to bring to auction, then there is no reason to pay for an appraisal in my opinion.
A reputable and knowledgeable auction house will be able to find comparable sales, the provide you with an auction estimate that they feel will encourage the strongest amount of bidding.
As far as achieving the best results, as long as the photos are clear, proper titling and description, and accurate measurements of the work, the bidders will come.
If the work is rare, the perhaps you should try and get the piece into auction for Asian Week in New York.
