Subject:Advice for Appraising Japanese Art
Posted By: Jen Fri, Dec 22, 2017 IP: 206.80.128.11

Hello,

I believe I might have an Murayama Okyo original. Can anyone give me any advice on best practices for finding an quality appraiser? I am looking to appraise for auction. I am located in the United States.

Thank you

If you're going to bring to auction, then there is no reason to pay for an appraisal in my opinion.

A reputable and knowledgeable auction house will be able to find comparable sales, the provide you with an auction estimate that they feel will encourage the strongest amount of bidding.

As far as achieving the best results, as long as the photos are clear, proper titling and description, and accurate measurements of the work, the bidders will come.

If the work is rare, the perhaps you should try and get the piece into auction for Asian Week in New York.

Good luck!

Murayama Okyo appears to be a painter. You may want to look into getting it authenticated by a reputable source, if you want to achieve maximum value. Auctioneers will tag it with "in the style of", "attributed to", or some such other phrase indicating that they won't stand behind the artist identification. Without authentication, you will achieve a small percentage of its value if it is an authentic piece.

Cheers,
Stan
