Subject:ukiyo-e print
Posted By: david Fri, Dec 22, 2017 IP: 2607:fea8:1d5f:f819:

Hello, Can anyone identify the artist/ seal of this ukiyo-e print? NOTE: The seal is faint (even on my end), that is why I darkened the photo! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! David.

Inscription is the title of print,
五月雨 Samidare (Rain in May)
The seal reads,
弘明 Hiroaki
Hiroaki was the art-name (using it from 1921) of Matsuhashi Shotei (松橋松亭)1871-1945 shin-hanga artist.
With regards,
I.Nagy

Your print was designed by Takahashi Shotei, sometime after the 1923 earthquake and before the publisher's (Watanabe Shozaburo) 1936 catalog. The seal reads "Hiroaki" which was an art name used by Shotei. The title (just above and to the right of the seal) reads literally "Fifth Month Rain" or "May Rain". However, in Watanabe's 1936 catalog, this print (#512) is titled "Flower-Seller on a Rainy Day". In the Ota-Ku Exhibition catalog from 2005, where it is listed as #251, it is titled "Early Summer Rain".

Your print is documented, as C-13, on this page from my website: http://shotei.com/artists/shotei/shotei_catalog/shotei_catalog_detail.php?id=C-13

Everyone has done a great job giving you specific artist and print info. I'll add one more thing...

Ukiyo-e was the term used for prints from the 18th to late 19th c. Prints done in the manner of your in the 20th c. were part of a movement called Shin -Hanga, or the new print movement.

The subject matter of Shin Hanga focused more so on contemporary scenes, and their was a great deal of focus on the utilization of color and shading to create a much more vivid scene.

Your print is lovely.
