Subject:Identification of box

Hi, I have this old box my mum gave me, and I need to find out it's origin.
The history behind it is my grandparents ran a boarding house in the 1920's-1940's at South-End, England, and many transients were often there. One woman who often stayed used to visit China and Japan, and often gave gifts to the children.
The box is possibly pewter or silver (unpolished for many years), 75mmW X 30mmH X 50mmD, possibly a snuff box, tobacco box or opium box, and has a distinctive hallmark on the base at the back-right corner.
Can anyone shed some light on this box?
Cheers
Ed
