Subject:Yongzheng Cloisonne

Is it of Yongzheng period?

The wirework, enamel colors, quality of casting, and artificial patina make me skeptical that this is any earlier than 2010.

But I await evidence for a different opinion.

My first impression was that this one had the kind of pitting and patina that might suggest a mid-20th century, early post-WWII date of production. I went looking for past opinions and found a couple pertaining to hexagonal Canton enamel vases with similar construction of their bodies to this vase; i.e., exposed bronze ribbing.

The first comment, 15 years ago by Forum Founding Father Anthony Lee, opined that the ribbed enamel vase was early 20th century, while a 2014 opinion from Tim found a pair of such ribbed vases probably to be post-1950s or later. I can see valid reasons behind each earlier opinion, considering the vase at hand, and would still be inclined to give this cloisonné piece an edge on being mid-20th century, before the factories were regimented.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I agree. This vase is likely rather new and trying to imitate the rustic style of later Qing cloisonne. The enamels are very poorly laid and spilled out of the wire when it was made. Most definitely not Yongzheng period.

Different color scheme and patina, same sloppy cloisonne wirework and garish reds/oranges.

Different border around neck, but otherwise pretty much the same.

Thanks, and thank goodness I didn't buy a pair myself before getting this education! :)
