Subject:Kano period tiger painting
Posted By: Wayne J. Mon, Jan 15, 2018 IP: 2601:449:8301:afb9:9

Hello I. Nagy and RAT. Thanks for your help on the bear painting! Here is a tiger painting which has a lot of stains and patches of missing surface. I hope you can translate these pictures for me and estimate the age of the piece. There is a picture of the signature and seals, one of the writing on the outside of the mount, and one of the painting. (It looks like the third character of the signature is mostly worn away.) Thanks in advance!

I read the signature on the 1st picture,
啓眞 Keishin
Script on the mounting in my reading,
虎....画 Picture of.....Tiger
啓眞筆 Painted by Keishin
Unfortunately, momentan I could not find the name in my textbooks and identification dictionaries. Still
I am working on it.

With regards,
I.Nagy

The name the artist using seems to be 敬真; I think I. Nagy will have more success identifying the artist than me.

In the meantime I have found the painter named Keishin
(啓眞)in the largest (10 vols.) Japanese Painters ID
Dictionary,
Keishin (啓眞)was the real name of Ikai Shōkoku (猪飼
嘯谷)1881-1939 Kyoto born painter, who belonged to the
Shijō (四條派)School of Painting.
The signature in the dictionary matches to the signature on the scroll. As of the seals, he used 猪飼嘯谷 Ikai Shokoku or 嘱谷 Shokoku seals.
In our case it is completely worn away.
This means that the scroll might be not so old, it was just the storage very bad. (It might have been stored
in a damp and moldy place for very long)

With regards,
I.Nagy

Even though the age of the painting is disappointing, many thanks rat and I. Nagy, for your extra research! I hope you enjoy doing it. I will post more paintings, but not more than one a day! I know little about the paintings I've purchased over the years, so will try to post the ones I believe may be more interesting or have more value. Thanks again! -Wayne

Nice work, what is the title of the painter's index that you refer to?

The painter`s dictionary I refer to,
日本書画鑑定大辞典 (全10冊)
中野雅宋 (著)
国書刊行会 2006-2012)
(18000名、落款 58000 収録、 Price; Yen 280,000
Too expensive, whenever I use it I have to go to the
University Library)

With regards,
I.Nagy
