Subject:Japanese yellow ground cloisonne vase w/ silver mounts
Posted By: Brandon mccloskey Tue, Jan 16, 2018 IP: 173.191.104.106

Hi all, I was hoping you guys could help me date this 5 1/2" tall vase I have. All similar ones I can find range from antiquity to mid century with nothing I personally can find to distinguish the ages.
There is what appears to be a mark on the bottom but it looks very unprofessional, almost like a crack. The top and bottom mounts are pure silver or there abouts, not plated if that helps date the piece.
There is also some spiderwebbing(?) in the cloisonne that I was wondering if could be repaired and if it effected the value much.
Oh, if someone can identify the flowers too that would be great :)
And the entire piece wouldn't be silver right?

Per Fredric Schneider's book, The Art of Japanese Cloisonne Enamel.

"Nagoya, in use ca.1945-50. Wired. Identified in company materials and Nagoya and Shippo-cho personal communications."

The cracks are a blemish that, generally, seriously reduces the value of the piece.

That said, I think the thick lemon-custard enamel in pieces like this one is very attractive, so if you bought if for personal enjoyment and the cracks don't show much when the piece is displayed, just enjoy it and don't worry about the resale value.

Excellent, thank you so much beadiste! I suppose I was never able to find the mark because I was searching for a fan with the letter A and not a diamond. I have to admit I was hoping it was some obscure Ando mark used before the known one but oh well it doesn't really matter, I did get it mostly for personal enjoyment. I agree with you the custardy yellow is very attractive but its a shame about the cracks :/ They are ever so faint, you cant even feel them with your fingernail. I was thinking about cleaning them really well to try and get the green (what I assume is from copper) out and putting some clear nail polish on it, what do you think?

and certainly don't use nail polish.

Removing the metal corrosion with chemicals, without knowing if the substrate is copper or silver, is likely to damage the enamel as well.

And nail polish would diminish the value of the piece to zero.

I was just going to use a fine jewelry cleaning brush and some baking soda tooth paste to try and get that green out of there but thank you, If I do nothing to it will it get worse? When I first acquired the piece I didn't notice it (It could have been there) but Im thinking it happened in the years sitting on my shelf?
