Subject:Tang Dynasty Jar
Posted By: Andre Tue, Feb 06, 2018 IP: 139.193.213.220

I got this recently, looks like a Tang jar. Height is 14 cm.
Does somebody have more info about the period and about this kind of items?

Looks like a jar I once owned. Mine was about 10 inches high. An expert thought it might by Cham ware from Vietnam, 14th or 15th century. Pics attached.

I thought also before that it could be a Vietnamese Cham jar but the handles little bit look different, although similar. There was in Sotheby's a jar with similar handles and similar glaze color.

The Sotheby's jar looks like it's lead glazed earthenware, but yours appears to be iron-ash glazed stoneware. I looked a some Tang Changsha ware jars, but could find none similar to yours. Maybe your jar is from another kiln, maybe it's pre-Tang?

I saw similar jars in Indonesia and one that looks same as this but I think the sellers do not know the period. Thes sell them as late Tang, early Song, early Yuan etc.
The small handles style resembles on Tang jars.
