Subject:Help with Mark on Vase
Posted By: Robert Mon, Feb 26, 2018 IP: 2600:8805:8880:a420:

Hi,
Can anyone help read the paper label on this vase? I have a pair. They look just like cloisonné but in fact are porcelain. Thanks so much!

千八百三十 1830 - a number not a date.

Inscription on the label reads,
仟百三十 - 1130 (Numbers)

With regards,

Your vases indeed are cloisonné on porcelain, which type is called "Shippo". If you query the term in the forum search feature, you'll bring up past discussions of such wares.

The label looks like it may be a price tag, When rotated 90-degrees to the left, the number seems to read 1830 (千八百三十 ). I'm unsure of the other notation at lower left, which may be read as originally rotated.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Fredric Schneider discusses cloisonne on ceramic (totai jippo for a pottery body, jiki jippo for porcelain) in pages 219-228 of his book The Art of Japanese Cloisonne Enamel
