Subject:"Chinese" carved "cinnabar" lacquerware trinket box.

Can anyone tell me about when and where this was made? It is hand carved and wood underneath but thats about all I know. Lacquerware not cinnabar correct?

It is a Japanese carved lacquer ware, called Kamakura-bori. I does not look really old.

Thanks Nagy, I had a feeling it was Japanese. do you think it's some sort of resin or polymer over the wood? When I picked it up it was caked in dust, do you thinks it COULD be old?

The Chinese or Japanese lacquer is made from the wound-sap of a lacquer tree. To achieve different colors and
color shades after curing various substances, like iron
oxids (black) cinnabar (red) is added to it.
