Subject:Rhinoceros horn libation cup

I found this beautiful little libation cup while browsing through a Texan antique mall is certainly caught my eye. I recall watching Antiques Roadshow at my grandparents or year or so ago when a gentleman brought in a grouping of these libation cops ever since I had only hope to one day I’d be as lucky to find my own. This far I’ve been able to at least look up online and verify that the fibrous look of the material indicates that it’s rhinoceros horn. However reaching out to Sotheby’s and Skinners auction houses I’ve been unlucky in being able to obtain verification or value of the cup. The marking at the base I hope indicates what dynasty it’s from so I can help a jet. Any help would be fantastic!

It's a modern ox horn carving made in China. These can also appear fibrous in certain area depending on how they are viewed.

I thought it may be but everything I find on the ox horn doesn’t show the fiberous detailing. I compared it to this rhino cup.

I think the rhino horn shows fibrous, matted hairs, whereas the streaks in ox horn are caused by melanin deposits. I also had an ox horn carving that I initially thought was rhino horn.

First of all, search the Internet for : Rhinoceros horn libation cups. You will find different shapes. 50 years ago I saw several specimen at Sotheby's in L A. I recall seeing beautiful carvings, but no signatures. Maybe this helps.
