Subject:Help to identify this jug !!!!! ( Iznik )
Posted By: Giuseppe Mon, Mar 05, 2018 IP: 85.228.90.34

I bought this jug some time ago. The shape is very similar to an Iznik jug but the design is archaic and poor. Can someone help me identify it?
Thank you
Giuseppe

I think this is a "Birnkrug", likely from Siebenbürgen.

Good catch Mat. Perhaps the early Italian style of decorated faience was preserved in some Transylvanian villages. Could Giuseppe's jug be 18th or 19th century? That's one reason I like pottery - styles are continually being "re-invented".

Can't say for sure but the stylized floral and geometric decoration looks a lot like Italian tin glazed pottery (maiolica) from the 14th century. So, a very early proto-maiolica ware. But those ewers/pitchers generally had flaring bases and pinched mouths for pouring. I'm guessing that this same style of ware was also made in Islamic lands including Turkey having been spread by trade. The decorative style, however, is not classical Iznik.

Thanks Mat and Robert.
Your help has been extraordinary.
It seems to be a Jug from Transylvania 19th - 20th century. Especially because the brown color is in iron oxide and there is no glazing inside.
Giuseppe
