Subject:Enamel Guangxu or Republic (decheng?)
Posted By: Nick Tue, Mar 20, 2018 IP: 81.244.71.41

Hello again dear forum members

This is dedicated to Beadiste and anyone else interested in chinese cloisonne.

I have this pair of superbly crafted vases. Since there is no marking on the bottom but only traces of labels, I suspect this is a republic period work, possibly by decheng (derived from reading beadiste's blog).

FYI: the one to the right is cleaned and both vases have some damage.

Can anyone support or confirm?

Many thanks !

Nick

Very attractive pieces. This particular pattern has been an ongoing mystery to me. It appears on pieces that can be dated to 1908, when Teddy Roosevelt's "Great White Fleet" visited China. CiXi died at the end of that year.

The pattern appears often in subsequent decades - such as that Feng Yuxian bowl described in a blog post, celebrating Christmas in "the 11th year of the Chinese Republic"

http://www.beadiste.com/2015/01/puzzling-evidence-chinese-cloisonne.html

It seems to have been a favorite for small bottles, smoking sets, shallow bowls.

And I have a small bowl that I'm pretty sure dates to the 1960s-70s. Pic attached of a red bottle with a Peoples Republic of China label. You can see how the design became abbreviated, and the spirals more loose.

But what does it represent? Artemesia? Was it inspired by a combination of the lotus scroll pattern and Western acanthus scroll designs? Buddhist imagery because of what appears to be a pendant jewel? It seems to be a pattern unique to China, and it died when the old cloisonne artists finally passed away.

Does it appear on porcelain pieces?

Dear Beadiste

Thanks for this extensive reply.

Yes, I agree with the artemisia background pattern, as well as the acanthus leaves. I also have the feeling we can see water lilies flowers in blues and water lilies bourgeons in pink.

I totally trust you on the Buddhist influence.

These vases embody the spirit of this era by mixing different references.
