Subject:Hetian jade - old or new?
Posted By: Justin Fri, Mar 23, 2018 IP: 24.4.228.175

I found this for not very much, and wondered if it's really Hetian jade. I can't tell if it's hand carved or not, or very old or new. Any any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

this photo I'm posting to help for comparison is of two different pieces of hetian jade the piece with skin is an older carving (don't mind the dirt stuck in the recesses of the carving, i should have cleaned it before taking the picture) and the little fish is very top quality from the studio of a friend in China.

I would be very hesitated to call this Hetian jade while it could be made of lower grade nephrite jade such as Kulun mountain nephrite jade. You can do a scratch test on it to make sure. I do not believe it can be scratched by its look. I simply did not see the unique texture of Hetian jade piece on your piece. Also, base on these low resolution pictures, its carving lines appear to be modern, while it may be vintage but I do not believe it is antique. Good for a study piece though. Of course, I can be wrong. Super
