Subject:Please help identify origin of embroidered art
Posted By: JayC Fri, Apr 06, 2018 IP: 97.118.115.241

I just received four wonderful pieces of Asian embroidered art that I think are from China. I'm hoping someone can either confirm...or set me straight...on their origins. They are all signed by the same artist and they are all images of workers doing daily tasks...it's as if they are intended to be a series. Because space is limited I have included pictures of only one piece of embroidery but all are of similar content. The man who owned these pieces served in both WW2 and the Korean war and got them when he was overseas. I'm hoping someone can provide information about these pieces and, perhaps, the name of the artist. Thank you in advance!

Just one other question, I believe these were made in Japan, or for the Japanese market, (given the straw coat on the 19th century woman farmer). I know that Xi is a Chinese surname but wouldn't this be Kiyoshi in Japanese? Again, thank you!

Surely 喜由 in Japanese reads Kiyoshi
The first embroidered image (woman with hoe on her shoulder) superficially looked a bit Chinese ,but
looking carefully the rest of images I tend to think that they are Japanese.

Again, thank you! Thought you might like to see close-ups of Kiyoshi's work. I, for one, am amazed since I have trouble sewing on a button!
