Subject:Japanese Kutani mark
Posted By: Susan Chilson Sun, Apr 08, 2018 IP: 75.138.161.198

Can anyone help with the mark on the back of these lovely Kutani plates?

They were a donation to our local feral cat rescue and I am trying to determine a value.

The mark reads: Kutani 九谷 Oda 織田 Sei 製 (= Kutani - made by Oda).
Date: circa 1890-1923.

2 Generations: Oda 1st (1846-1915) and Oda 2nd (1898-????). They were pottery makers and exporters of Kutani ware from Terai between the late Meiji Period and 1923. In 1923 their Yokohama factory was hit hard in the great Kanto earthquake, therefore they moved to Kobe, but shortly after the business closed.

Regards,
Martin.
