Subject:Cantonese porcelain charger age help
Posted By: John Mon, Apr 09, 2018 IP: 2607:fb90:82af:8a11:

Can someone tell me the age of this oval plate. It was given as a gift for mothersday from a u.n diplomatin 1962 to a late relative and reads "cantonese" may 1962 mothersday on the back in crayon but seems to be older by the wear and dirt filled pock marks in the back. Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure what the size is but it looks like a platter with “rose mandarin/medallion/canton” pattern, name depends on subject matter depicted or a combination thereof. Enamels were applied onto porcelain blanks from Jingdezhen or elsewhere in China and fired on the spot in Canton (Guangzhou) for export. The majority of this type of wares were made after porcelain kilns in Jingdezhen were rebuilt in 1865 after the Taiping rebellion’s destruction. The tentative dating of your platter is second half of the 19th century.

Your Chinese Rose Medallion oval serving platter appears to date to circa 1880-1890, just before export markings of "CHINA" were added to the base in response to US Customs requirements. At the time, the kiln center of Jingdezhen in Jiangxi Province was still recovering from an invasion by forces of the Taiping Rebellion in the mid-1850s, and demand for sets of Rose Medallion dishes was already stretching production capacity at the kilns. This accounted for some of the roughness you see, but the fact is, anyone in the West who could afford a set of these coveted dishes, didn't hide them away in the cabinet, but usually flaunted them by use when entertaining. So it's hard to find such wares in perfect condition nowadays.

These later Rose Medallion dishes were less densely and carefully decorated than the earliest editions, which were in production by the 1850's. A photo is included herewith of a 14-inch well & tree platter from the 1860s.

Best regards,

Bill H.

You have a very nice platter in the rose medallion pattern that appears to date from the mid 19th century. The inclusions in the glaze and the glaze"pops" all point to that early time period. The enamel work is actually a cut above that usually found. All in all, a good example of its genre.

Looks 20th Century or possibly late 19th Century. Will have to wait for others to comment. The squat foot looks good for 19th, but these decorations are quite ubiquitous in the mid 20th Century too.
