Subject:Help Identifying an interesting Edo era woodblock print
Posted By: Pythagoras1357 Thu, Apr 12, 2018 IP: 2600:1700:ed90:1610:

I have a print that I'm trying to identify, and I'm a total noob, becoming fascinated with the richness of this art form, and the complexity of identification. I've spent quite a bit of time trying to identify on my own, and I believe this piece is from 1861, but have been unable to identify the artist, publisher, or translate the title. It's an awesome piece, and similar to this work by Kunichika IMO https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/128211920625887146/, but I'm unable to verify any connection, whether it was him, a student, a mentor or? Any help is much appreciated!

Hi,
The signature (in the lighter blue bubble on the rightmost print) reads '芳年' - Yoshitoshi.
He is a fairly famous ukiyo-e artist, often regarded as the last great master.

Your print is titled 賎ヶ峯大合戦之図 - "Illustration of the Battle of Shizugatake". This was a battle that took place in 1583 near Lake Biwa.

I found one copy of it being sold (attached URL) which identifies its year as 1861. I was not able to find any other photos of or information around it on other websites.

Hope this helped.

There is another on yoshitoshi.net, but it provides no more information than already provided here. It's the next to last triptych on the link below.

Cheers,
Stan

URL Title :Shizugamine ō-kassen no zu
