Subject:japanese armor do
Posted By: david Thu, Apr 19, 2018 IP: 2607:fea8:1d5f:f819:

Hello, Can anyone identify the emblem on this Japanese (Samurai?) armor "do" and translate the script? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! David.

Inscription reads,
京都 十一特製漆 Kyōto Tōichi Tokusei Urushi
Kyoto Specially Made Lacquer
Unfortunately, I did not find any trace of the said lacquer mark on tne Japanese language net.

With regards,
I.Nagy

It is half a "do" for kendo, the Japanese fencing martial art so not real samurai armour. It seems that the holes are for missing lacing that the top half would hold an extra layer of material to support the "do" on the chest (see pic).

The crest might be from the Atagi family (see bottom image at link)
