Subject:Japanese scroll - Original vs. Reproduction
Posted By: Owen G Sat, Apr 21, 2018 IP: 67.83.158.248

Hello,
I bought this scroll on eBay and want to know if someone could tell if it’s an original. I know that antique reproductions of Japanese scrolls exist... How does one tell whether the scroll is hand painted or an antique reproduction?

Thanks and best wishes,
Owen

The seal reads 'Sesshū' (雪舟). This is most probably a much later copy after the work of Sesshū Tōyō (雪舟等楊 - 1431-1506).

Guy.

if It is indeed a copy then copyist is a master painter. The seller verified that it was hand painted and not a repro. Lucky me
