Subject:Vase Information Please
Posted By: Steve Shepherd Thu, May 17, 2018 IP: 69.75.231.194

Hello-
I'm looking for some information on a vase that has been our family for a few generations which I am now the caretaker. 22" high, 14" at its widest and the top is 9" wide. I have no additional info to provide other than it came with my grandparents and mother from Michigan to So California.
Thanks in advance for anything provided.
SS

Hi Steve,

A very nice vase you have.
It comes from Japan and this kind of ware is mostly called Satsuma. That's not porcelain but a kind of stoneware. If you look close you should see it has a fine crackled surface. I think it's made in Kyoto (Kyo-yaki) and probably from Meiji period. Sorry, I can't help you with the marks (picture is upside down)but maybe others can (I was thinking of Taizan but I'm not sure).

Regards,

Arjan

Although I can't decipher most of the characters, I think the last 3 on the left are: Eizan 栄山 Saku 作 (work by Eizan).

Regards,
Martin.
