Subject:Kanji script or older? Translation help needed…

I don't know if this is kanji or an older script, but likely from later Edo/Meiji era. I was told the first syllable means beautiful or attractive, but may change meaning depending on the second. Any help with translation would be appreciated.

This is one character,
魁　with several readings,
kun (訓）readings: kashira 　（pioneer, leader)
sakigake (herald, forerunner)
on (音）readings: kai, ke (ke has a meaning of goon)
In Chinese,
kui (chief, head)
also a surname
