Subject:Would Like to Know The Age of Chinese Bronze Pixiu Candlesticks
Posted By: Kevin Donnelley Sat, Jun 02, 2018 IP: 104.148.180.219

Dear All,
This pair of pixiu candlesticks look quite old by the patina and the details in design. I have found in a web search modern replicas of these but which show lesser design character and were certainly lacking any natural patina. I am hoping to know from an expert the possible age of these. Thank you for looking
L: 3 3/4", 9.5 cm

Kind regards

Kevin

the dark purplish patina, more evident and almost liver color on the one to the left in the first photo, and highlighted from underneath in the 2nd one, may have been produced by the addition of a small amount of silver to a copper alloy, similar to the hepatizon patina- a copper alloy from the classical period that was made with gold or silver
see Wikipedia for more on this type of alloy

URL Title :Hepatizon
