Subject:Xu Beihong GROUP OF HORSES
Posted By: michaela clooney Wed, Jun 06, 2018 IP: 2600:1017:b000:1a1c:

We found this at a church/school sale in Ithaca, NY. Ithaca is a very multi-cultural community and home to many people of Chinese heritage. A few of them have told me that our artwork was by Xu Beihong and that it reads as a love dedication to his wife.
We would like to know if we have an original. It is on a heavy paper. Is the anything we can look for? Size? Color?
We might be interested in selling it and wonder where the best place for that might be.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Your photo didn't appear with your post, maybe because it needs to resized smaller, but in any case, it is highly unlikely that you have an original painting by Xu. His various pictures of horses are among the most widely reproduced of any Chinese painter; a mass-produced print or other reproduction is much more likely. The Asian art curator(s) at the Cornell University art museum might be able to help you one way or the other. If genuine you should sell through Christie's or Sotheby's, as they have the greatest credibility as auctioneers. They will take 20% of the price but you are unlikely to be able to realize the picture's value on your own.

Thank you. I did think about contacting the Johnson Museum at Cornell so now I will follow through!
