Subject:Japanese Satsuma Plate
Posted By: RFM Wed, Jul 04, 2018 IP: 2601:281:c202:b68a:a

Greetings! Request assistance in translating mark on this Satsuma plate. I know the rebus is the Shimazu family crest, but I'd like any greater detail on the maker (below the rebus). Thanks much!

The mark continues beneath the circled cross with a partially abbreviated version of the two-character name "Satsuma" (薩摩/薩广).

Best regards,

Bill H.

The mark just reads: Satsuma 薩广, with a simplified 2nd character "ma": 广 instead of 摩.
The style of the images look like pieces of Hododa (Hotoda), but most of his pieces are signed with his name 保土田 and often the name(s) of the maker and/or decorator. Date of the plate: first quarter of the 20th century.
Martin.

The characters just read Satsuma but the second character is written in a short way.

Regards,

Arjan
