Subject:Help me Identify this
Posted By: Raymond W Wed, Sep 12, 2018 IP: 75.58.9.187

Hello experts,

My ancestral home in China ZhongShan has a few pieces of furniture that I would like help in identifying.

1.

Could you let me know what type of wood this is made of ?

2.

I would like to know if this furniture is allowed to be exported out of China.
Ideally I would like to have these furniture shipped to my home in the USA.

Thank you much!

Ray

You would appear to have a Chinese table with matching chairs dating to around 1900, or the late Qing dynasty. I have a set in a slightly different style from the same period. It and others I used to see when antique shopping in Bangkok in the late 20th century were commonly called "telephone tables & chairs". I'm unsure if this was an original name, or just arose due to the widespread use of the sets for telephone installations. My set, which is made of teak, originally belonged to a Sino-Thai family and could have been made in Thailand, where there are many ethnic Chinese furniture-makers.

Here's a picture of part of the table, which is mostly drowning in stuff on display. Same story with my chairs, which I have draped in textiles.

Best regards,

Bill H.
