Subject:Chinese or Japanese?
Posted By: Francisco Wed, Sep 19, 2018 IP: 188.80.170.6

Hello,

I know this is a pretty dumb question, but I thought I was able to differentiate them well. I got this piece at a house sale. I thought it was Japanese (nashiji lacquer, gold on black "simple" maki-e, there is a Fujiyama allegory there). Now checking the box shape and contents it reminds me of a chinese sewing box.
The craftsmanship is excellent, needs some work recovering it from years of neglect.

What is your take?

Thank you
F.

I think this is likely the signature.

What’s the name? :)

Apart from the Mt. Fuji, all other motifs are Japanese, which means that it is a Japanese sewing box.
Insriptinon reads,
山見 花 - Yamami Hana - Could have been the name of owner (Hana was a typical name for ladies in Meiji period)

With regards,
I.Nagy
