Subject:Interpretation of signature on bronze tiger
Posted By: Philip Donner Sun, Nov 11, 2018 IP: 185.122.109.142

I own a bronze tiger inherited from my grandfather who traveled in South-East Asia in 1898.

He lived in Paris at the turn to the 20th century and could also have bought the tiger in Paris.

Can anyone interpret the signature? I would appreciate if I could get a better understanding of the origin of the statue.

It's a Japanese maker's mark. The name in the middle of the mark reads 'Hideyoshi' (秀美), a metalworker active during the Meiji period.

Guy.

Hello All.
Just a shame we couldn't see the whole bronze. I would have liked that. D

Thanks for your feedback. There is quite lot of detail which could be of interest. I'll prepare a photo for your needs, once I know what is relevant.

Not having received any further advise, I produced this photo. Hopefully this satisfies your needs.

Now that we have a concise idea about the maker of the tiger, this question remains to be answered: Is there anybody around. who would be able to interpret the other characters of the maker's mark.
