Subject:Help with this big 'imperial style" seal
Posted By: Geoffroi Sun, Nov 25, 2018 IP: 92.143.17.71

Hello all!

I have this very big glazed pottery seal 'imperial style' and I would like to know
the meaning of the inscription... The stamp measures 13 x 13 cm!
Further, could somebody tell me if it's just a decorative seal or has it been used
to stamp documents or paintings?

Many thanks in advance for your kind help and knowledge!

Best regards,

Geoffroi

I'll defer on the seal script translation to those better qualified, while providing some comments and photos for comparison. Below are some images of a somewhat larger seal with molded dragons on top that I found at an estate sale several years ago and eventually sold. It had some damage and was missing the base with its seal, which judging from the two handwritten characters that loss exposed on the interior, likely was a faux Ming Jiajing (嘉靖) mark.

That seal of mine was molded in soft-paste pottery, which I also suspect yours to be, so may have been made at one of the Shiwan-area kilns in the Guangzhou suburbs. In my opinion, both probably were made in the Republic period or first few years of the People's Republic. Yours seem to have benefited from a much better job of molding and glazing.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Reading of the seal,
曲逆侯陳平印 - Seal of Chen Ping Marquis of Quni

(Chen Ping ( -178 B.C.) chancellor in the early Western Han Dynasty.)

Dear Sir,
I'm very grateful to you for your precious help!
Do you think that this seal could be dated from the beginning of the XXth century or earlier?
Many thanks again.
Best regards,
Geoffroi
