Subject:Need help with info on this beautiful carved chair.
Posted By: JD Mon, Apr 22, 2019 IP: 107.77.226.93 Hi, I am considering buying this chair in a private sale. The problem is I am a total newcomer to Chiness furniture. I could not tell you if it's 5yrs or 500yrs old. I also don't know if it's worth $200 or $20,000. I only have one pic and no associated info to go on. I do know the owner is well off and has been collecting art/furniture from China and the Philippines for oved 50 years. They spent a lot of time there right after Mao's regime ended and had ties to well to-do families. They have a lot of old stuff from China but I don't know if this chair is old. Would love to know anything about it and it's approximate value if anyone could help. How much would you pay for it? I assume it's not ancient but may have some age on it. Thanks in advance for any help. |

Posted By: John Sebesta Tue, Apr 23, 2019 These chairs were made in China, Japan and other Asian countries from around 1860-1930 for the western market: usually have dragon motif and painted black. I bought one in the 1980s for $300, it’s probably worth about that much today, and my Chinese inlaws cringe whenever they see it. |
