Subject:Really Kiyoharu Hishikawa?
Posted By: Yura Thu, May 23, 2019 IP: 176.106.204.132

Dear forum members
I want the final confirmation from the experts that the author of this picture of (蓑亀) Minogame is Kijokharu Hishikawa (菱川清春) (1820s - 1830s), not Qí Báishí (齊白石; 齐白石) (1864-1957).
Thanks to anyone willing to help me

The signature reads 'Yôsen Hôgen hitsu'(養川法眼筆 - painted by Hôgen Yôsen).

Yôsen (養川) is an artname of the painter Kanô Korenobu (狩野惟信, 1753-1808); Hôgen (法眼) is a Buddhist honorary title. Don't know if your painting is an original or a copy. The seal seems to be drawn by hand.

Guy.

Correct reading,
養川法眼筆 - Yōsen Hōgen-hitsu - Painted by Yōsen
Hōgen

Yōsen(in) -養川(院)was the pen-name (Gō)of Kanō
Korenobu 狩野惟信 1783-1808
Hōgen 法眼 (Eye of Law) was a priestly rank. In Edo Period the painters were allowed to use priestly ranks.

With regards,
I.Nagy
