Subject:Japanese Satsuma Vase, Signed, Exhibition 1893 Fair Building?
Posted By: Jen Thu, Jun 06, 2019 IP: 2600:1702:4530:94e0:

Hi, I have this gorgeous Satsuma vase. I found the same vase in different color that says it might be from the 1893 Worlds Fair in Chicago but never confirmed.

Does anyone know the signature mark on bottom or the building with flags depicted? This stands 12" tall.

Thank you!

The marks reads: Kinkozan 錦光山, see picture.
Satsuma ware.

Kinkozan Sobei VII seems first to have exhibited abroad at the International Exhibition of Barcelona in 1888; he also exhibited in Chicago at the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 and showed three vases at the fourth National Industrial Exposition in 1895. He won a silver medal in Paris in 1889, gold and silver medals at the Paris Universal Exposition of 1900, a meiyo ginpai (honourable silver prize) at the fifth National Industrial Exposition of 1903, a Grand Prize at St. Louis in 1904, and a Grand Prize in Liège in 1905.
Regards,
Martin.

Martin, thank you SOOO much for that information!
Do you or anyone happen to recognize what building this might be depicting?

I didn't think to research the St. Louis 1904 Worlds Fair! I am in St. Louis, I just found this photo of the Missouri State Building from that fair, and this sure looks like it might be the building, do you agree?

Since the photo wasn't there, I've looked at some pictures of the Missouri State Building, but the tower and the windows do not match, unless it's partly rebuild later. Or it's an artist's impression of the building.
Looking at buildings at the other Fairs, there are some other buildings that come near the painting on the vase.
So it's a matter of comparing.
Martin.
