Subject:Satsuma Vase - how old
Posted By: Tiny Tim Wed, Jul 24, 2019 IP: 2405:204:29:4bfd:f15

Hi
I have got this vase. I wanted to know if the marking show it to be 20th century. Is this a Satsuma or a reproduction made for the masses at a later stage.

The mark under the Shimazu crest (circle with cross) reads: Satsuma 薩广 with a shortened character for "ma", normally 摩.
Without any pictures of the vase itself, it's impossible to answer your questions.
Regards,
Martin.

It's a 1920's - 1930's Satsuma-style vase, indeed made in large numbers for export to USA and Europe.
Martin.
