Subject:Japanese Gyozan woodblock print confirmation
Posted By: Tom Aspden Fri, Sep 13, 2019 IP: 80.189.189.20

Hi, I recently bought this print, and while removing the frame (that was shoddily done) discovered a small lible stating that this was a Gyozan print, and from c. 1885. Could someone please give me their opinion, as well as a translation of both the signatures and inscription at the top. Please ask if you require further photos.

Very much appreciated, Tom

The Boston MFA has a copy at the link below:

https://collections.mfa.org/objects/461829/weeping-cherry-itozakura-and-china-rose-choshun-with-wa;jsessionid=AF83894147770BCD5977E23E275B0871?ctx=c0eb6c93-ee94-42b0-a4fa-90896a2dfe56&idx=4

Assuming that the one at the MFA is an original means that yours is not.

Cheers,
Stan

Thank you Stan for your opinion, would you therefore suggest that this was a later print, using the same woodblock?

Rather than opinion, let's call it a fact that the two prints are different.

1) If you read I. Nagy's comments and the MFA link I supplied, you will note that the prints have different numbers in the series (15 vs. 20).

2. The other end of the scroll may be smudged, but it looks different.

3. There is no printer info in the lower left.

4. It may be that some of the blocks used are the same. Some of the print looks darn close, but then I see differences like this branch where the middle thorn is not the same length.

Cheers,
Stan
