Kind Regards to all readers and posters.

Richard

Your hexagonal vase with faux four-character mark of "Made during the Qianlong Reign", does appear to be hand-painted, save its stamped-on base-mark. I'm inspired by late 20th century events in China to think the vase perhaps was done by a Jingdezhen novice artist of the late 1960's, while his more experienced teachers were involved in countryside self-criticism classes. That scenario offers the best explanation that comes to mind right offhand for those offbeat butterflies interloping on the cracked ice and prunus pattern and conjuring up an allegorical reference to artists of the period who were caught up in the web of intrigues woven by the Cultural Revolution-era "Red Guards" and "Gang of Four". Or maybe the artist was just a natural-born innovator.

Best regards,

Bill H.
