Subject:Lion Vase with K'ang Hsi Mark
Posted By: Stan Shursky Tue, Nov 22, 2005 This earthenware (?) lion vase is about 14 inches tall. The execution is a little crude. There are minor defects possibly attributable to slips of the tool used to incise the design (are those concentric arcs waves?). Some examples can be seen in the lower right quadrant of the 3rd picture. |

Posted By: Juragan Fri, Nov 25, 2005 I suppose the vase has 50 - 100 years as the dealer said. We have seen a lot of modern pieces painted like yours, but the footring is different with the older ones. The Kangxi mark, of course, has been copied until the recent years, but the brushtroke of iron-red of lion dog combined with overglaze uneven blue and foot ring of piece are typical of Republic era piece. |

Posted By: Anna Saratelli Fri, Nov 25, 2005 A close up of the mark would help a great deal. If you notice a flat like even consistency this would point to a piece after 1990. A mark where you can see the strokes stop and start is good although doesnt mean it is old either. The foot concerns me as it is also typical of the newer pieces coming out of China...better closeups would help. Regards ~Anna |
