Subject:Chinese (?) vase
Posted By: Natalie Sun, Dec 29, 2019 IP: 80.5.77.168

Hello all,
Could anyone help me with the period/exact origin of this piece please?

Thank you in advance!

Your question mark is appropriate. This appears to be European chinoiserie, perhaps Chantilly or another French maker, with with an imitation Chinese red marking on the base. I don't collect such items but would speculate it dates to the early 20th century. The painting style and impressed numeral mark rule out China origins. Still collectible.

Best regards,

Bill H.

How could you describe this as a fake? There is skill and artistry showing, but I can't see this as Chinese in any way.

Perhaps this is the high end of the Samson ceramic range. Edmé Samson et Cie was created in 1845, and continued production until 1969.

The base mark and that incredible 'poem' are pure fantasy.
