Subject:Identifying marks, text, motif on wood piece
Posted By: Donald May IV Tue, Mar 10, 2020 IP: 76.209.244.153

I would like to know the translation and significance of the marks on this piece. I feel that the designs of moths, gourds on the vine and praying mantis appear unusually well executed and put this piece somewhat above a tourist item or similar.

It is carved wood with a soft sort of black lacquer with gold decorations.

I believe it to be Chinese and it is approximately the size of a western piano bench, except somewhat taller.

Can anyone identify the maker and possibly the era of manufacture?

Thank you.

I'm not sure about the reading of the complicatedly stylized framed marking,
1, One character: 芳 Fang or
2、Two characters; 艸入 Caoru
Dating,
光緒三年 - 3rd year of Guangxu (1877)

With regards,
I.Nagy

I. Nagy, I am very grateful for this interpretation.

Do you think the piece is really 150 years old? How interesting.

Have you any other impressions or remarks about the piece?

Again, many thanks for your help.

-Don
