Hi,
Help if possible to translate this signature and seal on this Japanese painting of carp.
Thanks
Michael

I think it is Chinese,
Signature,
北宁山樵 - Woodcutter of Mount Beining (Pseudonym)
Seal,
林良重印 - Seal of Lin Liangzhong

I can't find artist with this name.

Just to complicate the situation a bit, there is also a plausible Japanese reading of the artist's name: 林良重 → Hayashi Kazushige or Yoshishige, but it cannot be found either in the Japanese artists's name dictionaries or on the net. Not to mention that the pseudonym 北宁山 or 北宇山 would not be very interpretable in Japanese -
because mountains or mounts with such names do not exist in Japan.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you for your work on this I. Nagy. Most interesting, I thought it was going to be straightforward, but like a lot of Japanese/Chinese art it isn't as you have illustrated.
Best wishes
Michael

Dear Michael,
Do you have any knowledge of the provenance?

I.Nagy
